Transportation and logistics industry:
A powerful driver of our economy
Buying products to meet our day-to-day needs is such a simple thing to do. But behind the purchase, the items’ journey from production to the store shelf is a serious undertaking. So companies need to innovate and perform to keep delivering the goods.

Companies generally ship their products by truck, ship, train or plane. For items to be shipped as efficiently as possible, they often have to use a number of different shipping methods for a single journey. This concept is called intermodality, and it can save time and money. Using this approach, logistics responds to the needs of warehousing services and shipping support services, such as freight forwarders, customs brokers, etc. Ultimately, every player has an important part in the equation.

Almost 6,300 businesses operate in transportation and logistics in Greater Montréal. This crucial sector generates economic benefits of $4.3 billion every year. Shipping products efficiently is a challenge tackled every day by tens of thousands of Quebecers working behind the scenes.

Montréal is strategically located for transporting merchandise both nationally and internationally. It is a North American hub for incoming and outgoing merchandise, between Quebec, Ontario, the American Midwest and Western Canada. It also plays a key role with Europe, particularly with the new Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, commonly called the Canada-European Union Free Trade Agreement.

The city is facing many challenges in the coming years. Traffic flow and the road infrastructure are important issues for businesses. Plus Montréal needs to develop intermodal infrastructures to maintain its international competitiveness. But the industry also needs to organize, and CargoM is a good example of this sort of initiative. Since 2012, this industrial cluster has rallied transportation and logistics players around shared objectives to support the growth of this key sector for the city.
